Yesterday may have been the first time True Blood has been nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series, but for those who have dutifully followed the HBO drama since its inception (with fanged-fanaticism, perhaps), the nomination was nothing short of long over due. With a cult-like following, if True Blood (and the other vampire dramas – Twilight, anyone?!) has taught us anything, it’s that vampires (and their non-blood-sucking co-stars) are not only cool again, but cooler than ever. True Blood’s Carrie Preston is no exception.
Sure, Carrie made her mark in My Best Friend’s Wedding and even appeared on Sex And The City (particularly interesting since, when Carrie Bradshaw married Big, her name too became Carrie Preston – although that’s neither here nor there!), but it is with her role as the anti-vampire Arlene Fowler on True Blood that her popularity has been resurrected – and we’re glad – because this is a real beauty we’d like to break bread (or blood) with.
So, we sat down with Carrie Preston and asked her to weigh in on real beauty.
What do you think makes someone beautiful?
I think wearing what makes you feel like yourself, knowing what looks good on you, and not imitating someone else’s style translates as beautiful.
How do you deal with the pressure for body perfection in our culture?
I take the time to exercise and eat well so that I can feel good and comfortable in my own skin. Then I don’t feel the need to compare myself with other women, whether in the media or in my own life.If you could give your younger self advice about beauty, what would it be?
I used to keep my hair neutral and long, and I was little shy about my body, so I wore clothes that were way too big. So I would say, “Get a better haircut and don’t be afraid to show off your body! You’re young!”
What is your one, can’t-live-without-it beauty product?
Indu body lotion. It smells like a little bit of heaven on earth!!
