Kritin Parle de Pam

Kristin Bauer

Kristin Bauer van Straten, who portrays the lesbian vampire Pam, reflects on Advocate.com on how groundbreaking True Blood truly was in its portrayal of characters and stories that staked at the heart of what it means to be a minority in America.

“I always wonder how many people just enjoy the show and how many people see the depth that Alan Ball began,” Bauer van Straten says, referring to the show's gay creator. “And for me, that's what gives HBO and the character of Pam in this show a lasting presence.”

“Crazy stuff happens in Bon Temps,” she adds. “But really, it's nothing crazier than what we deal with in life on earth.”

There's been no shortage of crazy stuff in Bon Temps, the fictional Louisiana town where humans and supernatural creatures reluctantly coexist. Vampires, werewolves, witches, werepanthers, fairies, and more have descended upon the locale in recent years, often at odds with one another as well as the conservative natives who view them as monsters.

Bauer van Straten sees the draw that such colorful characters, as portrayed by an attractive cast filled with “eye candy,” could have on an audience that is not necessarily pro-LGBT, and how Ball has used that magnetism to help sway hearts and minds.

“How do you get people to see another viewpoint that they are closed to?” Bauer van Straten muses. “Art is a wonderful way to do that. … I'm sure there's a lot of people who are watching True Blood who are not pro–gay rights, but maybe that opened the door. Maybe it got them to think a little bit.”

Kristin Bauer van Straten is as in love with Pam as the rest of “True Blood's” fans. Reflecting back on the show's run, it's clear that she has nothing but good feelings for the caustic vampire.

“ I am very lucky that I got to play Pam, because whoever played her would be very lucky ,” she tells Zap2it.

Kristin says she believes fans live “vicariously” through the lives of fan-favorites like Pam and Lafayette, and she finds herself satisfied with where Pam's storyline ends up.

“I feel satisfied as an actor this year — and I have every year — that I got to do all the things that I got to do,” she says. “It's 'True Blood,' and if we didn't see these characters go through everything we watched them go through, which is so difficult, you want everyone to be happy but it might be really boring. I can't say that the fans will be bored, that's for sure. There's definitely a roller coaster ride in store.”

There's a slow burn for Pam in Season 7 , and Bauer van Straten says the storyline “really kicks in episode 3 .” Though she wouldn't offer hints about where Pam's storyline heads, Bauer van Straten does say fans can expect plenty of fantastic flashbacks.

“We find out a lot more about Pam, we have some great flashbacks, and those are really, really fun for us. We want to know as much as the fans what our backstory is. I had a wonderful year and worked a lot of hours, more than I usually do, so I'm really happy about it,” she says. “The information that we do get in the flashbacks about Pam are the huge, huge forks in the road that we've taken for granted that we didn't know about Pam.”

With great flashbacks come great Pam outfits. “I'm picturing one in my head, and when I saw it in the fitting I thought, 'Oh my god.' It's like a time capsule outfit ,” she says excitedly. “ We did the hair and makeup for that, so it's really going to be great .”

One of Pam's most memorable facets is her on-point fashion . There have been plenty of iconic looks over the years, and Bauer van Straten found herself taking a literal walk down memory lane recently.

“I was early for a wardrobe fitting, and I just started browsing through Pam's closet. It was amazing. I would look at the outfit and then take a second and remember, 'Oh, right!' The whole scene would come back to me, and my state of mind at the time and my thoughts about Pam and the show,” she says. “There were so many incredible outfits. One of them that I think was so amazing, it was a red sequin jumpsuit onesie.”

Some of her co-stars didn't have the same fondness for it. “Sam Trammell, it's the only time I've done a scene with him, Sam Merlotte, and we were at a panel, and the question to him was, ' What's the most disturbing thing that you've had to film? Is there something you just can't get out of your mind? 'This was years later, and he said, ' Well, that one outfit Pam was wearing … '” Bauer van Straten recalls. “ That's the most disturbing thing for you? My sequins? And he was mesmerized with me on the day, and rightly so when I saw it again in the closet. ”

Bauer van Straten still can't help but gush about everything she loves about Pam . “ I just love her personality, and all those sides of Pam that we've seen, and why it's such an amazing character to play, is we remember her for those great lines that they write and the sarcastic delivery ,” she says. “ But we've also gotten to see her vulnerable side, which only comes out in regards to Eric. We've got this well-rounded person who I feel like we've all grown to love, and not see her as just ab**** but loyal, and also she only says what we're all thinking. She just doesn't care. I think that's why she's so enjoyable .”

True Blood's Pam, Kristin Bauer van Straten talks with Vulture about Season 7 and her quest to find Eric in the interview below:

After abandoning her vampire bar Fangtasia (which became a base for Hep-V-infected vamps) and her progeny Tara (who since found the True Death), Pam finally found what she was looking for — but was she too late? At least Eric didn't die during his nude sunbathing session, but he's got a separate affliction now, something he shares with 1/8th of the world vampire population — Hep-V. What does this mean for our favorite Viking vamp, and his progeny? Kristin Bauer van Straten chatted with Vulture about Pam and Eric, playing Russian roulette, and her new appreciation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Pam has been wandering the world trying to find Eric, and when she finally does…
… she finds out he has V, Hep-V. Her worst fear was that she couldn't find him, or that she would be too late, and then she finds him, and she sees that he is dying. What I imagine was that Pam looks at her life, at the end of season six, and looks at her life without Eric in it, and can't face it. She has to know that she did everything in her power to find him. And then of course when she sees him, we'll see how far she'll go to try and keep him with her as long as possible.

Nora had an extreme case and died quickly because she was a test subject. Eric could live longer.
Exactly. Like we see with human illness, when people get the same disease, such as cancer, the outcome can be very different. That's explored a lot during this season. That's a huge subject. And I feel like we've gotten to know over the years, especially after we saw Pam's flashback, how important Eric is to her, because he saved her. The life she was headed for was going to be hard and short and lonely, and she really chose, and forced him, to either allow her to die in that moment, or become a vampire and create that special bond. And whenever he's been in peril, she's been so vulnerable. That's when we realized how much he meant to her. And to find him in such a state… Their relationship is more complex than a father/daughter relationship, but that's the closest thing we have as humans. A best friend and a father that's been stretched over a hundred years. It's inconceivable for her to think of existing without him.

Do you think because she was caught up in her search for Eric that she didn't feel the exact moment that her progeny died? Because some fans thought that was “proof” Tara might still be alive, that Pam didn't register it.
Right… We do find out more about that later. There is something about that in episode three. I can't totally tell you about it, but it is something that is addressed, and it was kind of an editing decision, but it will be addressed.

For all we know, Pam was playing Russian roulette when it happened, and she had to play it cool.
Right, right. [Laughs] It's very interesting, the things humans will come up with to bet on, and I thought it was very clever that they had vampire Russian roulette with wooden bullets, with the vats that we stand in, to make it easier to get the next two in there. And we had to hold the guns right over our hearts.

Have you ever played Russian roulette before?
No. [Laughs] But we all think of the classic movie Deer Hunter when we think of Russian roulette, which is why I thought it was so funny and so perfect when that guy, the circus leader there, comments, “We watch Deer Hunter.” That's how they got the idea. Death is something we try not to think about as humans, and when it happens to someone close to us, it's a game changer in our lives. Your life is actually changed forever, and you contemplate what part of us continues, where do we continue. So I have at times been very philosophical about playing a vampire, because I thought, really, everybody is immortal — it's just as a vampire, your body is what is becomes immortal. Almost.
